A 19-Year-Old Lorwyn Goblin Just Became Commander's Hottest Chase Rare

The Hobbit's new commander The Great Goblin turned Knucklebone Witch into a scarce combo piece — here's what the market actually shows, and what it doesn't.

Knucklebone Witch has sat quietly in Lorwyn's shadow for nineteen years with exactly one printing. As of September 1, 2026, our own market data has it at $16.63, and the reason is a single card from August's The Hobbit set: the new legendary commander The Great Goblin.

The combo

We checked the printed text on both cards before writing a word of this. The Great Goblin reads: "Whenever you put one or more counters on a Goblin, Orc, or Army you control, The Great Goblin deals 2 damage to target opponent," plus a second ability that lets you exile and play cards off the top of your library whenever another Goblin, Orc, or Army you control dies. Knucklebone Witch reads: "Whenever a Goblin you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may put a +1/+1 counter on this creature."

Put them together and every Goblin that dies both feeds The Great Goblin's card-advantage trigger and grows the Witch, which in turn re-triggers The Great Goblin's damage ability the moment she picks up a counter. It's a clean, self-reinforcing loop in a tribal shell that Commander players have been building all August — EDHREC listed the Witch in a majority of published Great Goblin decklists within weeks of the set's release.

What the trackers say — and where they disagree

Knucklebone Witch has never been reprinted, so every copy in circulation is nineteen years old, and secondary-market trackers are telling somewhat different versions of the same spike. MTG Rocks put the move at $1.60 to $10.99, a 521% climb, over the month to August 11. The Cardboard Chronicles' August wrap logged it differently, from roughly $2.00 to $22.99 over the same stretch. We're not going to average those two numbers into a fake consensus — they're two different snapshots from two different moments in a fast-moving month, and neither is ours to certify. What we can confirm first-hand is where the card sits right now: $16.63 on our own market data as of today, September 1.

The collecting angle

This is the shape of a classic single-printing squeeze: fixed supply, a new Commander-format demand driver, and a card that was never reprint-friendly enough to show up in a Commander precon or supplemental product. Whether it holds this level, keeps climbing, or cools off once the initial deck-building wave passes is genuinely an open question — we're reporting the move, not calling the top.
