Competitive Brawl's Ban List Gets a Rewrite: Three New Commander Bans, Nine Cards Freed to the 99
Wizards' October 12 announcement leaves paper formats untouched but reshapes Magic Arena's Competitive Brawl with its first commander-only bans.
Wizards' October 12, 2026 Banned and Restricted Announcement touched exactly one format this time, Magic Arena's digital Competitive Brawl. It also introduced a new kind of ban: three cards banned specifically as commanders, while staying legal in the other ninety-nine slots of the deck.
Three new commander bans
Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow, Spider-Man 2099, and Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice are now banned as commanders in Competitive Brawl, though all three remain legal to play in the 99 if someone else is leading the deck. Wizards' announcement points to win rates: "we are seeing some commanders emerge with win rates high enough to make them problematic."
Nine cards paroled to the 99
In the same announcement, nine previously banned cards moved from a full ban down to a commander-only ban, meaning they're legal again as long as they aren't the one calling the shots: Ajani, Nacatl Pariah; Nadu, Winged Wisdom; Oko, Thief of Crowns; Old Stickfingers; Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer; Rusko, Clockmaker; Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student; Wrenn and Six; and Tajic, Legion's Valor. Nashi, Illusion Gadgeteer was also rebalanced, losing its flash keyword. Wizards called it "a minor change to push it back in line."
Why just Brawl
Competitive Brawl is a Magic Arena-only format, a 100-card singleton bracket with commanders that debuted in June 2026, separate from paper Commander and from casual Brawl. The commander-only ban is only possible because it's digital: Arena's client can restrict a card to one deck slot in a way a paper tournament never could. Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Alchemy, Historic, Timeless, and ordinary Brawl all got no changes in this announcement. Wizards' Carmen Klomparens said the quiet elsewhere was deliberate: "Stability and predictability are both qualities that we're looking to emphasize." mtgrocks reported Wizards had even weighed a Modern change over the Basking Broodscale Combo's dominance, but held off to avoid disrupting the Regional Championship season currently underway.
None of this touches paper legality. Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice is exactly as playable at your local table as it was before the announcement, commander-only Arena ban aside.
