Empower Jace, Echoed Pairs, and a 500-Copy Serialized Headliner: Reality Fracture's Mechanics Are Official

Reality Fracture previews kicked off September 8, and Wizards put its own name behind the details that matter most for the set the same day: the marquee mechanic is a keyword action called "empower Jace," and the set's chase Collector Booster card is a 500-copy serialized throwback to Ancestral Recall. Both come straight from Wizards' own Reality Fracture Mechanics and Collecting Reality Fracture features, published September 8, with the set releasing worldwide October 2, 2026.

The Echoverse, in brief

Reality Fracture's story centers on Jace Beleren turning on his former allies to build a "perfected, mirrored reality" called the Echoverse. The card design mirrors the story: throughout the set, iconic Magic legends appear as echoed pairs — two versions of the same character, one from "the Magic Multiverse you know" and one from Jace's Echoverse, built as color-shifted opposites of each other. Wizards' own card gallery (cross-checked against our own spoiler tracker as of September 10) already shows several of these pairs revealed: Chandra, Torch of Defiance against Chandra, Chill of Compliance; Ajani Resolute against Ajani Unrelenting; Garruk, Curse Breaker against Garruk, Veiled Butcher; Liliana the Faultless against Liliana the Repentant; Karn, Argent Defender against Karn, Gilded Guardian; and non-planeswalker pairs like Ghalta the Immovable/Ghalta the Unstoppable and Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance/Titanbones, Towering Heart. Every Play Booster and Collector Booster contains echoed pairs cards. More pairs will surface daily through previews, which run September 8–17 ahead of a September 25 Prerelease.

The mechanics: Empower Jace, Heartwood tokens, and the return of Prepare

Matt Tabak laid out three mechanics worth knowing in the official feature:

• Empower Jace is the set's keyword action, and it always arrives with a number attached. Protege's Awakening carries "Empower Jace 6," whose reminder text reads: "Put six loyalty counters on a Jace token you control. If you don't control one, first create a blue Jace planeswalker token with '−1: Surveil 1' and '−3: Draw a card.'" If you already control more than one Jace token, you choose which one gets the counters — and the tokens aren't legendary, so nothing stops you from stacking up several through other means.
• Heartwood tokens are a new predefined token type: red-green artifacts that tap for R or G, introduced to ramp mana and pad artifact counts at once.
• Prepare returns from Secrets of Strixhaven. A creature with a prepare spell can become "prepared," putting a copy of its attached spell into exile that you can cast later — but that copy disappears if the creature leaves the battlefield or becomes unprepared, and control of a prepared permanent carries the right to cast that copy with it.

The collecting angle: a 500-copy Ancestral Recall throwback

Wizards' Collecting Reality Fracture feature (Mike Turian and Jubilee Finnegan, published September 8) names the set's headliner: Bloodline Recollector // Ancestral Craving, a double rainbow foil serialized card capped at 500 copies, appearing only in Collector Boosters. It mirrors the Secrets of Strixhaven headliner concept and carries art by Mark Poole — the original illustrator of Ancestral Recall. Serialized copies are mechanically identical to the regular version; they're just numbered and scarce.

Alongside it: facet foil shattered mirror cards, a Collector Booster-exclusive foil treatment on the set's shattered mirror cards — alternate-reality versions of famous Magic cards, printed alongside the artwork that inspired them, and numbering 5 rare and 8 mythic rare in all; a first-of-its-kind Reality Fracture Secret Lair Bundle that folds Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, and exclusive Secret Lair promo reprints into one box, sold at local stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and the Secret Lair storefront; and a 10-card Special Guests panorama illustrated by Marina Banker.
