Lorwyn Eclipsed: Faeries, Kithkin, and a New -1/-1 Counter Engine

Lorwyn Eclipsed: Faeries, Kithkin, and a New -1/-1 Counter Engine

2026 opened with a long-awaited return to Lorwyn-Shadowmoor and two fresh mechanics worth knowing.

A long-awaited return

Lorwyn Eclipsed opened the 2026 Standard year on January 23 as the 109th Magic expansion — the first proper return to the Lorwyn–Shadowmoor world. The tribes players remember are back: goblins, kithkin, faeries, and elves, rebuilt with a modern design sensibility.

The new mechanics

  • Blight — a new keyword action that places -1/-1 counters, giving the set a built-in attrition and removal angle.
  • Vivid — an ability word that rewards controlling permanents of many colors, with each Vivid card using your color count differently.

Returning favorites round it out: Convoke, Behold, Evoke, and Persist.

Story and format

Narratively it's the second chapter of the final arc of the Metronome storyline. On the table it's Standard-, Pioneer-, and Commander-relevant, with a Commander set (ECC) and Special Guests (SPG) cards alongside the main release.

Our take

Faerie and elf tribal decks always find a home in Commander, and a clean -1/-1 counter package like Blight tends to age well. If you're building around the Lorwyn tribes, singles are settling into fair prices now — a good window to pick up the pieces.
