Magic Reveals Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, Starring Hela and the Darkhold, for April 2027

Wizards of the Coast confirmed on October 10, 2026 that Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, the next Universes Beyond set, releases April 9, 2027: built around a new story starring the Asgardian death goddess Hela and the magical mutant Illyana Rasputin, with the Darkhold itself as the plot's dark center.

Hel is empty

Wizards' announcement opens with the line "Hel is empty, and all the devils, sorcerers, and vampire-hunting vampires are here," setting up a story Wizards describes as all-new and original to the Marvel Universe rather than adapted from an existing comic arc. The announcement centers on Hela, Mistress of Darkness; Magik, Illyana Rasputin; and a creature called Gargantos, the Endbringer. A companion Marvel Comics release, written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, ships digitally in February 2027 ahead of the set's physical April release.

Four Commander decks

Wizards' own announcement confirms Commander decks and Scene Boxes are part of the product lineup but didn't itemize them on its announcement page. Wargamer's report on the preview names all four:

• Lords of Hel: black/red, commanded by Hela, built around token sacrifice
• Midnight Sons: white/black, commanded by Blade, a vampire deck
• Gods of Asgard: red/white/green, commanded by Thor, leaning on high power and equipment
• Strange Academy: white/blue/black, commanded by Doctor Strange, a blink deck

Previews are already live

Wizards hasn't named any new keyword mechanics for the set, but individual cards have already been previewed. The announcement page itself shows card images for The Darkhold, Hela, Mistress of Darkness, Rise from the Nether, Magik, Illyana Rasputin, and Gargantos, the Endbringer, and points readers to the full Darkhold Destiny Card Image Gallery for the rest. Scryfall already lists full oracle text for Hela's card, including its back half, Dark Tutor, a graveyard-cast spell filed under the card type "Sorcery — Vengeance," a label that doesn't match any mechanic Wizards has named so far. Whether "Vengeance" turns out to be a new mechanic or just flavor text on this one card is still unconfirmed. The announcement also mentions "new Booster Fun treatments" without specifics. Expect the usual spoiler season to fill in set boosters, collector boosters, and bundle contents as April approaches.
