Patrick Stewart's Death Sent Star Trek Collector Booster Prices Soaring
Collectors moved fast on Magic's Star Trek Collector Boosters after word spread of Stewart's passing, chasing the hand-signed Captain Picard cards, fewer than 250 of which exist.
Patrick Stewart, who played Jean-Luc Picard for nearly four decades, died October 28 at age 86, and the news rippled into an unexpected corner of the collectibles market the very next day: Magic's upcoming Star Trek set. TCGPlayer sales of the set's Collector Boosters jumped sharply on October 29, the day his death became widely reported, as collectors moved on the only packs that can contain a card actually signed by him.
A tribute written in cardboard
Stewart died in Los Angeles "in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny" following what his family described as a brief battle with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia, according to multiple outlets including CNN and NPR. He is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his children, Daniel Stewart and Sophie Alexandra Stewart. Tributes poured in across the entertainment world, and within a day, into the Magic collecting community too, because Stewart had signed cards for Wizards' upcoming Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek crossover set before his death.
The numbers behind the surge
According to TCGPlayer pricing data reported by The Gamer, the market price of Star Trek Collector Boosters moved from $495.34 on October 28 to $576.02 on October 29, an increase of roughly $81 in a single day, while sales volume jumped from 63 boxes to 565 boxes over the same period, a reported 796% increase. Those figures come from one outlet's read of TCGPlayer's data; we haven't independently verified the exact dollar figures ourselves, so treat them as a snapshot of a fast-moving market rather than a fixed price.
Why these specific packs
Star Trek Collector Boosters retail at $37.99 and are, per Wizards' own product materials, the only place a hand-signed card can turn up. Jean-Luc Picard is one of seven "signed headliner" cards in the set, each limited to fewer than 250 signed copies according to Magic collecting outlets covering the set's pull rates, meaning Stewart's signature was already one of the rarest things in the product before his passing made it one of the last.
