Reality Fracture Ends Magic's Three-Year Metronome Arc on October 2

Magic's next expansion has a release date, a full mechanical identity, and a villain turn nobody saw coming: Reality Fracture arrives October 2, 2026, closing out the three-year Metronome story arc that began with Wilds of Eldraine. Prerelease weekend runs September 25 through October 1 at local game stores, with the set going live on MTG Arena a few days early, on September 29.

The story: Jace breaks the Multiverse

Reality Fracture is built around a genuinely bold premise. Jace Beleren — one of Magic's original planeswalkers — has torn open an alternate reality called the Echoverse, a version of the Multiverse where the threats that have haunted the story for years (Nicol Bolas, the Eldrazi, Phyrexia) never happened. Ruling it under a new identity, "the Theorist," Jace has effectively become the set's central antagonist, opposed by his former ally Chandra Nalaar. Every legendary character in the set gets an alternate-reality counterpart pulled from this fractured timeline.

The new Jace planeswalker card backs up the premise mechanically: The Theorist, Jace Beleren ({2}{U}{U}, 3 loyalty) reads "At the beginning of each opponent's draw step, you draw a card," with a +1 that makes a 1/1 blue Illusion, a −2 bounce effect, and an ultimate that draws three cards, then puts a +1/+1 counter for every card in your hand on each creature you control — a card built to feel like an opposing mastermind rather than a hero.

The mechanics: echoed pairs, in every single pack

The headline mechanic is Echoed Pairs: every Play Booster and Collector Booster contains one card representing the ordinary Multiverse and a matching card representing its Echoverse counterpart — same character, different fate. Confirmed pairs already spoiled include Chandra, Torch of Defiance opposite Chandra, Chill of Compliance, Garruk, Curse Breaker opposite Garruk, Veiled Butcher, Ajani Resolute opposite Ajani Unrelenting, Liliana the Faultless opposite Liliana the Repentant, and a pair of skeleton legends, Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance and Titanbones, Towering Heart. It's a mechanic that's also a collation gimmick — the two-sided identity crisis is baked directly into how packs are built, not just flavor text.

Collecting angle: a 500-copy chase card

For collectors, the headliner is Bloodline Recollector, a double-faced Vampire Warlock printed as a serialized card limited to 500 copies, exclusive to English Collector Boosters, in a double-rainbow foil throwback full-art frame. Beyond that, Collector Boosters carry Shattered Mirror cards (13 total, new "facet foil" treatment showing Echoverse deviations), Borderless Echoed Pairs (30 cards across 15 pairs with artwork that spans both halves), a 23-card Braintwister borderless series, and 10 Japan Showcase cards.

One wrinkle worth flagging before preorders lock in: Wizards confirmed on August 28 that a drought affecting a freshwater lake that feeds the Panama Canal has slowed a ship carrying North American Play Boosters, meaning Play Boosters specifically could run tight in the weeks after launch even though prerelease and release weekend should be largely unaffected. Wizards says all other Reality Fracture products remain on schedule and expects replenishment within a few weeks of release.
