The Austin grinder took Izzet Prowess through a 900-plus-player Modern field, then out-countered a Tameshi Belcher combo deck in the final to bank his first Pro Tour invite in over a decade of trying
Roy Varney won Magic Spotlight: The Hobbit on Izzet Prowess at SCG CON Dallas this past weekend — and he almost didn't make the cut at all. Per Star City Games' own event coverage, Varney squeaked into the Top 8 as the No. 8 seed on tiebreakers after a pair of Swiss wins and an unintentional draw at a higher table went his way, then ran the table to win a Modern Constructed field Star City Games describes as "more than 900-person."
From bubble to champion
Varney, an Austin local who'd been chasing a Pro Tour invite for "more than a decade," dispatched Sean Goddard in the quarterfinals before facing Mark Jacobson in the semis — a rematch against the pro who'd handed Varney one of his two Day 1 losses. Varney won that one in three games to reach the final against Liam Kane, piloting Tameshi Belcher.
The final swung on interaction. Kane took game one in classic Belcher fashion, landing a turn-four Goblin Charbelcher while Varney's answers sat in his sideboard. From there the sideboard did the work: four copies of Consign to Memory plus extra counterspells came in, and he had the answers in game two. When Kane brute-forced a Charbelcher onto the battlefield in the decider with a slow start behind him, Varney closed the game out with lethal pressure the following turn.
The win nets Varney $10,000 and a Black Lotus trophy; every Top 8 competitor — Mark Jacobson, Scott McNamara, Queen Varrone, Cristian Ortiz Ros, Liam Kane, Sean Goddard, Varney, and Evart Moughon — earned a Pro Tour invite, cash, and a foil Riddles in the Dark promo card.
The metagame that got there
According to Star City Games' own numbers, Izzet Prowess was the most-played archetype on Day 1, taking roughly 10% of the field on the heels of Jefferson Lee's win at the Spotlight Series stop in Brisbane the weekend prior — also on Izzet Prowess, per Wizards' own magic.gg recap of that event. Esper Goryo's and Esper Blink rounded out the top three by play rate but neither converted a Top 8 slot; Izzet Affinity and Devoted Druid Combo completed the five most-played decks. Day 2 began with 208 players who'd reached 18 match points on Day 1.
