Secret Lair's $200 Marvel Kit Smuggles In Two Cards From a Set That Doesn't Exist Yet
Marvel's History of Heroes went on sale today with 30 cards for $199.99, including two brand-new uncommons from next spring's Darkhold Destiny, five months before that set even has a name on shelves.
Secret Lair's Countdown Kit: Marvel's History of Heroes went on sale today, November 2, exclusively through MagicSecretLair.com for $199.99. Tucked inside its 30 cards are two uncommons from Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, a set that isn't even scheduled to have a Prerelease until April 2, 2027.
A 30-card tour through Marvel's time with Magic
The Countdown Kit is built as a "giant-size compendium" celebrating Marvel's run in Magic, with 30 individually sleeved cards drawn from across the game's history and reprinted with new Marvel-themed art. Each card ships randomly in non-foil, foil, or surge foil, so no two kits look the same. Wizards' own announcement confirms the kit is sold exclusively through MagicSecretLair.com, the Secret Lair storefront.
The two cards that technically don't exist yet
The headline twist, confirmed directly by Wizards: two of the 30 cards are Doctor Strange, Master of Magic and Beta Ray Bill, both new uncommons that will formally belong to Darkhold Destiny, a Marvel set that hasn't had its own Prerelease yet. Wizards says both cards "will be legal in all formats beginning with the Darkhold Destiny Prerelease" on April 2, 2027, meaning collectors are holding playable copies of a future set's cards nearly five months before the rest of that set is revealed.
What's actually worth chasing
Only a handful of the 30 cards have been shown off so far, but early coverage already has dollar signs on them. The outlet mtgrocks pegs the eight revealed reprints at a combined value of roughly $163 on today's secondary market, led by Fierce Guardianship at around $59, a card mtgrocks notes sits in over 860,000 public decklists, with Opposition Agent ($20), Timber Protector ($23), Heroic Intervention ($16), Molten Duplication ($15), and Devastation ($18, its first reprint since 1999) rounding out the list. Those figures are mtgrocks' own tracking, not Wizards', so treat them as a snapshot rather than gospel. But they explain why a $199.99 kit full of unknowns is already drawing attention.
