The Hobbit Hits Shelves August 14 — Adventure Returns to Middle-earth
Magic's first Standard-legal Tolkien set brings Bilbo's journey, a gilded Smaug, and three fresh mechanics.
Magic returns to Middle-earth on August 14, 2026 with The Hobbit — and this time the journey is Standard-legal. Following The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, this Universes Beyond expansion is the first Tolkien set to join the Standard rotation, tracing Bilbo Baggins from the door of Bag End through Mirkwood to the halls of the Lonely Mountain. Previews are live now, and prerelease events run August 7–13.
A Standard-legal trip to Middle-earth
The Hobbit is built around Adventure as its headline returning mechanic — fitting for a story that's one long unexpected journey. Each Adventure card gives you a spell half to cast first, then the creature waits in exile to be cast later, wringing two uses from a single card.
Three new mechanics
- Storied — a static ability that watches your board; control a storied permanent alongside three or more artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or Sagas and you complete an enduring story.
- Recruit — draw a card, then discard one; if what you pitched wasn't a land, a 1/1 white Human Soldier joins your company.
- Hone counters — placed on Equipment, each hone counter grants +1/+0 to the equipped creature. Sharpen Sting and go to work.
Sagas and Amass both return — though here you'll amass Goblins rather than Orcs.
Collecting the precious
The marquee chase card is a gilded Smaug the Magnificent, available only in Collector Boosters — the kind of dragon that belongs under glass. The set also brings Dwarven-language cards and special Dragon Hoard and Book Cover full-art treatments.
Products: Play Boosters ($6.99), Collector Boosters ($37.99), Bundle ($69.99), Gift Bundle ($89.99, September 4), two Scene Boxes — Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug, $41.99 each, each with three Play Boosters plus six borderless cards that assemble into a displayable panorama — a Draft Night kit ($119.99), and five themed Welcome Decks.
