We Are the Borg: Star Trek Commander's Fourth Deck Debuts the Assimilate Mechanic

The Esper precon led by The Borg Queen rounds out the Star Trek Commander lineup ahead of the set's November 13 release

The Borg have assimilated their first Commander deck. Wizards previewed We Are the Borg on October 26, 2026, the fourth and final Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Commander precon, built around a brand-new keyword mechanic: Assimilate.

The deck: We Are the Borg

We Are the Borg is the Esper (white-blue-black) precon of the Star Trek Commander lineup, and its commander is a mythic called The Borg Queen. Checked directly against Scryfall's card data, her text reads: "Artifact creatures you control get +2/+2. Whenever The Borg Queen enters or attacks, target opponent exiles cards from the top of their library until they exile a creature card. Assimilate that card. They put the rest on the bottom in a random order." The reminder text spells out the new mechanic: "To assimilate a card, put it onto the battlefield under your control with a +1/+1 counter. It's a Borg artifact creature and loses all other creature types."

That's the whole pitch: strip a creature out of an opponent's library, turn it into your Borg, and keep doing it until the table is wearing your colors. Wizards' own announcement confirms the deck ships as a ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck with a traditional foil, borderless-art version of the commander and 32 cards that are new to Magic.

We Are the Borg is one of four precons in the set. The others, per Wizards' decklist announcement: Federation Fleet (blue-red-white, led by Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary), Landing Party (green-white-blue, led by Commander Spock), and Klingon Fury (red-white-black, led by Worf, Defiant Commander). Locutus of Borg, a separate white-blue-black legendary artifact creature with lifelink that turns combat damage from your artifact creatures into more Borg tokens, carries the Assimilate theme into the rest of the set too, not just this one precon.

Assimilate: a new keyword, not a reprint

Assimilate is new to Magic, debuting in this set rather than recycling an older mechanic. It's a clean twist on Mind Control-style effects: instead of only stealing a card already on the battlefield, Borg cards reach into libraries and graveyards and turn whatever they find into an artifact creature under your control, stripped of its old creature types. It rewards the kind of sacrifice-and-rebuild shell Commander players already like, with a Star Trek horror-movie coat of paint on top.
