Wizards Beams Into Trek to Vegas This Week Ahead of November's Star Trek Set
STLV runs August 5-9 with a designer panel, learn-to-play demos, and a convention-exclusive Kirk promo card, three months before Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek launches November 13.
Magic: The Gathering is boldly going to one of the biggest gatherings in sci-fi fandom this week. Wizards of the Coast is the presenting partner of STLV: Trek to Vegas, running August 5-9 at the Rio Hotel & Casino — billed as the largest dedicated Star Trek fan gathering in the world — and it's using the stage to build hype for November's Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek set.
Six Decades, One Card Pool
The centerpiece is a panel hosted by Magic Lead Designer Gavin Verhey, walking fans through how six decades of Star Trek storytelling, characters, and iconic moments got translated into Magic cards and mechanics. For a crossover this sprawling — the set spans everything from The Original Series to Voyager and beyond — that kind of behind-the-curtain design talk is exactly the sort of thing that shapes how Commander deckbuilders approach the set once it's legal to crack.
What's Actually Playable This Week
STLV also marks the first time the public can get hands-on with the set before release. Wizards is running "Magic: First Contact," a guided learn-to-play program built specifically to welcome newcomers, and convention-goers get first crack at playing the Star Trek Welcome Decks months ahead of the November tabletop launch. A promo card — Kirk, Enterprising Captain — is being handed out on-site while supplies last, joining the set's earlier-revealed roster of characters like Janeway, Spock, Worf, Seven of Nine, and the Borg Queen.
Why It Matters for November
None of this changes the release calendar Wizards already locked in: Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek still launches tabletop on November 13, with MTG Arena players getting digital access a few days early on November 10 and prerelease events running November 6-12. What this week adds is texture — an early read on how the set plays in someone's hands, not just how it reads on a spoiler image, plus a genuinely convention-exclusive card that won't be available anywhere else.
