Wizards Calls The Zeta Set's Chaos Vault Launch "A Disaster" After Checkout Meltdown

Twelve days after Wizards announced the first Secret Lair ever sold as literal booster packs, the September 2, 2026 on-sale of The Zeta Set through the Chaos Vault fell apart in real time — and Wizards of the Coast said so itself, calling its own launch "a disaster" in a statement posted the same day.

The Zeta Set is the Secret Lair x MSCHF collaboration built to look like Magic's earliest 1992 playtest cards — 121 reprints across three print treatments (a black-and-white "photocopy" look on most cards, a photocopy-negative variant on about 10%, and a CMYK "color banding" treatment on about 5%), sold in random seven-card packs for $19.92 apiece, exclusively through MagicSecretLair.com. It was Secret Lair's first-ever booster-pack product.

What went wrong at the Chaos Vault

Customers hit the queue as soon as the sale opened and, according to Wizards' own statement, ran into checkout failures, timed-out payment screens, and confirmation emails that either never arrived or arrived twice. The sale queue was paused mid-launch to "manage technical difficulties." Outlets that covered the launch live disagree on exactly how long the pause lasted — ICv2 reported the queue was paused roughly 80 minutes before resuming, while EDHREC put the gap at closer to two hours, with the sale reopening only in the early afternoon. Multiple outlets, including ICv2, TheGamer, and Wargamer, agree on the basic shape of the day: whatever stock remained sold out within minutes of the queue reopening, in the US, UK, and EU alike.

Wizards' response

Wizards' statement did not soften the framing: "For everyone that showed up for today's Chaos Vault sale of The Zeta Set—it was a disaster." The company said it is investigating the root cause and, notably, would not rule out "an internal systems issue or external tampering" as the trigger. On remediation, Wizards committed only to sorting out which orders actually went through before deciding how to make it right: "We're continuing to investigate what happened today and it may take a little while to fully get our heads around it." Customers who believe they completed a purchase but never got a confirmation email were told to contact Secret Lair Customer Support directly.

The secondary market reaction

Because Secret Lair products are not reprinted, whatever sold on September 2 is the entire supply of The Zeta Set that will ever exist — and resale listings appeared within hours. Sources disagree sharply on the numbers, so we're naming both rather than picking one: EDHREC reported eBay listings running $80–150+ per pack, with one 12-pack lot listed asking $999.99, while ResellCalendar reported single packs flipping for up to $80 and full 12-pack bundles clearing $700+. All of those are asking or early-sale prices as of the evening of September 2–3 and are not a stable market yet — treat them as a snapshot of launch-day chaos, not a floor.

The chase cards in the set include Sol Ring, Skullclamp, Chrome Mox, and Mox Tantalite, alongside marquee reprints like Baleful Strix, Animate Dead, and Land Tax, confirmed against the official 121-card checklist.
