Wizards Overhauls Booster Packs for 2027: God Packs Arrive, Foil Commons Go Away

Starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm on February 5, 2027, Play Boosters become "Booster Packs," no longer guarantee a foil in every pack and drop foil commons and uncommons entirely — while a 1-in-1,000 "God Pack" of all rares and mythics joins the lineup, at no extra cost.

Wizards of the Coast announced on October 5, 2026, that it is restructuring what's inside every Play Booster and Collector Booster, starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, confirmed as the first Magic set of 2027 on February 5, 2027. Up front, Wizards says none of this comes with a price increase — but the contents of the pack you tear open are about to look different.

Play Boosters Become "Booster Packs"

The product formerly known as the Play Booster is being renamed the Booster Pack, per the official announcement on magic.wizards.com. Alongside the rename comes a real structural change: Booster Packs will no longer guarantee a foil card in every pack. Concretely, Wizards says foil common and uncommon cards are being eliminated from Booster Packs entirely. Collector Boosters aren't exempt either — Wizards confirmed it is removing two commons and one uncommon from the foil slots of that product too.

In exchange, Wizards is routing more of the pack's foil budget toward the top of the rarity curve: increased foil rare and mythic rare drop rates are coming to Booster Packs, and Japan Showcase cards will now be reachable in traditional foil through the Booster Pack wildcard slot — a treatment Wizards says has until now been "the sole domain of Collector Boosters."

The New Chase: God Packs

The splashiest addition is the God Pack — described by Wizards' Blake Rasmussen as "an epic, rare booster where every nonbasic card is a rare or mythic rare card." Every Magic Multiverse set going forward will include them, at two different rates depending on the product:

  • Booster Pack God Pack: odds of 1 in 1,000 packs, containing 14 rare or mythic rare cards — 10 non-foil rares/mythics, 2 non-foil Booster Fun rares/mythics and 2 traditional foil Booster Fun rares/mythics — plus a God Pack celebration card alongside them, for 15 cards in the wrapper.
  • Collector Booster God Pack: odds of 1 in 300 packs, containing 13 cards, 5 of them foil Booster Fun rares or mythics.

  • October 5, 2026: Wizards published the booster changes announcement.
  • February 5, 2027: Nauctis: The Sunken Realm releases as the first set under the new structure — a brand-new plane Wizards calls its "debut to Magic's take on an undersea realm."
  • No price change is attached to any of this, per Wizards' own statement.

The net effect for anyone who cracks packs at the kitchen table: fewer guaranteed small foils, but a real shot — however long — at a pack that's rares and mythics from top to bottom. Keep an eye on our spoilers page as Nauctis previews start rolling out early next year.
